Interview with Namila Benson on ABC Radio National

Photographer Hoda Afshar turns 110 camera lenses on well-known Australian whistle-blowers for the work 'Agonistes', a situation she likens to Greek tragedy. The Iranian-Australian artist has always been drawn to ordinary people who speak truth to power. Her work has taken her to Manus Island and a friendship with the journalist and refugee activist Behrouz Boochani. Hoda tells Namila why she believes ‘documentary photography’ often fails its subjects and how a man who survived years of immigration detention is helping her cope with lockdown in London. Agonistes is part of the international Photo2021 festival in Melbourne.
