In conversation with Megan Robson for Artist Voice, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney

This is an edited extract of a wide-ranging conversation I had with Melbourne-based artist Hoda Afshar 5 weeks into the COVID-19 lockdown from our respective homes.

Hoda and I spoke about many things – navigating a much smaller environment centred around the home, the difficulty of living in another country to family, the responsibilities of being an artist and building a relationship of trust with your subject, and finding the positive side of lockdown. Many aspects of this conversation have stayed with me – in particular, Hoda’s perspective of living in this new world in which touch has become dangerous, and the power of language to bring us closer together or re-entrench social barriers have resonated over the last few weeks.
